The DC Holocaust Museum has an extensive list of survivors and victims from one of the darkest periods in history. Classes in high school and college only skim the surface of the atrocities that took place in German concentration camps. It is the testimony of those who survived that truly hits home. Siegbert Wilzig, better known as Siggi, is one survivor who defied all odds to become a prosperous business man in America.

Siggi’s story is in the archives at the DC Holocaust Museum, along with so many others. However, the museum only gives visitors a synapsis. A book devoted to Siggi’s life delves much deeper. It can’t overlook the horrors of Auschwitz and Mauthausen-Gusen, or the slogan, “ARBEIT MACHT FREI,” translated to “work makes one free.” Siggi’s story begins with the loss of his family. Only a brother lived to tell the tale along with him. However, his life was so much more than his experiences at the hands of the Nazis. Siggi rose above everything negative in his life. He picked up the pieces of his shattered past to build a beautiful future.

Siggi wasn’t afraid to work hard, to leap into new adventures, or to grab hold of new opportunities. He married, had children, and built a fortune. His creative thinking and persistence did more than help him to survive everything the Germans threw at him. His spirit and determination helped him to forge a path to success.
